Consumer Reports: Roku Alternative – The Best Streaming Media Player

product review websites

Roku is a streaming media device that offers a wide range of content. It includes free and paid channels. This streaming device is available as a set-top box or as a stick. It also provides a mobile app that works on both Android and iOS phones.

Although streaming devices are very popular, Roku continues to offer a reliable service at an affordable price. In fact, in June of 2021, ROKU had 55 million monthly active users in the U.S. ROKU is also growing its customer base. The company also offers a free TV streaming service that will appeal to cord cutters.

Roku has always focused on content. They have partnered up with streaming giants like Netflix and HBO. Plus, they've licensed films from Columbia and Paramount. They also offer hundreds of apps including Crackle and Hulu. The company also has agreements with smart TV manufacturers so that the devices can be used with all major sets.

Roku's program guide is compact and easy to read. It includes niche services like Samuel Goldwyn Classics. However, it also contains a number of underrated movies and duds. Some niche services aren’t as robust or as popular as others.

Roku's menu system can be a bit clunky compared to other platforms. It does however quickly get to the apps and places them at the top. The search menu has also been improved. You can now browse based on genres and the most recent searches. And, you can track your favorite movies with My Feed.

Roku's voice command has less power than Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Google Assistant. Roku Ultra includes a Voice Remote Pro. The Voice Remote Pro features a headset jack and programmable controls. You can use the voice command to control the volume of your audio or toggle closed captions.

The remote cannot turn on the television. The remote is also unable to find the remote. On the other hand, the ultra model does support Dolby Vision, which promises better visuals. The remote is also equipped with an Ethernet cable.

An Ethernet port is located on the Ultra's back. The Ultra doesn’t have an HDMI extender. This is a problem.

Overall, the Roku Ultra streamer is inexpensive and simple to use. However, it lacks the remote-finder and voice control functions of the other streaming devices. It's still a great alternative. Especially, if you're looking for an affordable alternative to the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K.

Roku Channel offers free movies. Some are not as good as others, but there is a wide range of quality films. Roku's Channel is great for movie fans. There are dozens upon dozens of classics and movies from the '80s.

Roku Streaming Stick, another noteworthy feature, is also available. The Roku Streaming Stick, unlike other streaming devices is a stick that plugs in to a side-facing HDMI port. You may experience problems watching HD video if your HDMI extender is not available.
